STONE GIANT

Lighting Breakdown

I animated the blinking of the emergency lights and the flickering of the streetlight in Maya. I also modified the intensity of each light to achieve harmony within the scene. Modifications were made to prevent the speed of the flashing and intensity of the lights from overpowering the scene or drawing too much attention away from the rest.  The greatest challenge in the development process was having the ideal amount of visibility throughout the image to convey loneliness, but not push the viewers’ interpretation into chaos or fear.

Compositing Breakdown

I darkened the edges of the frame to give the impression that it was unfamiliar to the viewer. I used Nuke to make small variations in the flickering of the vending machine. I made adjustments until the speed and brightness reflected the scenario that the power source of the vending machine is the electricity being siphoned from the adjacent streetlight.

The Lone Tree

To create this piece, I took five rock models and populated them in Houdini. Then I made a proxy and exported it to Maya. Once in Maya, I moved individual rocks to certain areas to make a natural-looking cave environment. Following this, I sculpted the giant in ZBrush, textured him in Mari, and added additional rocks to him in Maya. The trees and roots were formed using Speedtree. I lit the scene in Maya and rendered it in Redshift. Finally, I composited the atmosphere in Nuke and adjusted its intensity to my liking.

Anecdote

To start off, I modeled the proportions of the girl and her props in Maya. I then used ZBrush to sculpt her details and features, as well as pose her. Her clothing was created using Marvelous Designer. After this, I textured the whole scene in Mari. I used Maya to form the background and design the lighting. XGen was used to form the character’s hair. Everything was rendered in Redshift, and finally I composed the atmosphere and performed color corrections in Nuke.

The Plastered Port

To begin, I blocked out the scene in Maya. Then I sculpted the assets in ZBrush and textured them in Mari and Substance. I used Maya to place the assets within the scene and to light the setting. I then rendered the project with Redshift. Finally, I composed the atmosphere and lighting effects in Nuke.
